1. The Shining

Stanley Kubrick’s chilling 1980 classic has many memorable scenes, but its most iconic must be when Jack Nicholson smashes through a bedroom door with an axe, sticks his head in the hole he’s created and snarls the immortal line ‘here’s Johnny!’ at terrified co-star Shelly Duvall.

As an interesting aside, the scene had to be re-shot after Nicholson, who was trained as a fire warden, originally destroyed the door far too quickly for Kubrick’s liking!

2. The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe

As any C.S. Lewis fan knows, the wardrobe door in the classic children’s tale The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe is the children’s portal to the fantastic (and fearful!) land of Narnia. Most recently brought to the silver screen in the 2005 film adaptation starring William Moseley and Anna Popplewell, this wardrobe must be one of the most famous pieces of furniture in popular entertainment.

Lewis dedicated the book to Lucy Barfield, the daughter of his close friend and adviser Owen Barfield, and she was his inspiration for the main protagonist.

3. Notting Hill

The iconic blue door from 1999’s Notting Hill, directed by Richard Curtis, plays a pivotal role in what must be one of the movie’s most memorable scenes.

Once the paparazzi catch wind that Hugh Grant’s dithering bookshop owner is in a relationship with Julia Roberts’ Hollywood superstar, they descend on Grant’s bedsit like a pack of wolves. As a distraction, his wild flatmate (Rhys Ifans) captures their attention by posing comically at the door in his underpants.

The portal actually belonged to a church conversion that director Curtis was said to have lived in previously, and the original blue version was sold in a charity auction, but you can pose for a selfie in front of its replacement (in your undies or otherwise attired!) at 280 Westbourne Park Road, Notting Hill, London.

In the writing instrument of which we are concerned, we perceive a touch of the East, combined with the best German craftsmanship.

To realize the design of the Pen of the Year 2016 two prominent names were involved: Silvia Miklin, the restorer of Room Vieux-Laque, and Tomizo Saratani, Japanese artist specialized in Maki technique, a traditional type of lacquer.

From their collaboration was born a divided decorative pattern in three parts which, when combined, create a single decoration.

Through a demanding manual process, each of the three black onyx plates was coated with several layers of black lacquer, polished and cooked. The artist then carefully painted the pattern on the lacquer and sprinkled several times still wet drawing with 24-carat gold powder in different shades.

The decorum of the Pen of the Year (2016) in platinum-plated version is inspired in an original way to design the Vieux-Laque Room. Embedded in the platinum coated stem, the plates of black onyx contrast well with the natural maple grain. The fountain pen is available in a limited edition of 500 numbered pieces, the roller of 50 pieces only.

Ex Machina

When the main protagonist of the film, Caleb Smith, reaches the house of billionaire and boss Nathan Bateman, the film starts as such and also starts the feeling of confinement. To achieve this, the director sought the services of designer Mark Digby, who manages to set up a refined setting with an extremely interesting modernist style.

In Digby’s own words, the architecture of the house plays an important role in both the visual aspect of the film and its plot. To achieve maximum tension, several locations were used for this futuristic thriller. Some scenes were filmed in a hotel in Norway and in a nearby hut there while the others were in other sets created for this purpose.

The house

The Hotel Juvet, located in northern Norway, was the main stage that gave shape to the house where the story is carried out. Taking advantage of the spectacular natural scenery, Mark Digby adapted the hotel to take us, little by little, into an atmosphere of distressing confinement.

Thus, the open spaces of the house as the living room, the kitchen or the corridors have a warm and friendly atmosphere with soft colors, wood and stone. Meanwhile other areas as bedrooms, the laboratory or the area where the robot is have stronger colors, more aggressive lights and, more generally, an uncomfortable environment.

There is no doubt that there are few films in which the location, in this case a home, becomes so important that it takes over the screen, having its own identity. Beyond the quality of the designer’s creative work, it is interesting to see how visual trends become benchmarks.
