The essential operation is simple. Just like in a flea market, customers come in contact with the sellers, see their product, try it out, negotiate prices and finally buy. Only in the case of freelancing this market is an online platform/page with customers worldwide. You are the seller, and the product is the service you offer.

Energy consumption has a considerable environmental impact. Opening a web page involves the emission of 20 milligrams of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas (GHG) involved in climate change. Every month Internet users worldwide are 35,000 million minutes online. The electricity used to transmit trillions of unwanted messages (spam) for a year would serve more than two million homes, according to the antivirus company McAfeee. CO2 emissions are equivalent to those produced by three million cars.

The global industry of new technologies generates a quantity of GHG similar to those of all the world’s airlines, according to Gartner. Viessmann recently published a video asset called “The World’s Digital Carbon Footprint: #TheCoalTruth“. Outside the technology sector, the NGO Greenpeace published in a report that provided for 2020 about 622.6 billion kilowatts / hour (kWh) per year in data center operations combined with the energy consumption of telecommunications. The servers, in addition to the power to operate, need an air conditioning system to prevent overheating.

The serious environmental impact of the Internet

Some experts claim that the environmental impact of the Internet is not as high as has been implied. Researchers Justin Ma and Barath Raghavan, from the University of California at Berkeley and the International Institute of Computer Science, decided to estimate the global energy consumption of the Internet. From various studies, they calculated that there are around 750 million laptops, one billion smartphones and one hundred million servers, among other devices. They also included the energy needed to manufacture them, the period of time in which they are replaced (three years for a laptop, two for a smartphone) and the consumption to transmit and receive the data. Ma and Raghavan concluded that the Internet consumes between 170 and 307 Gigawatts (GW), energy that would illuminate several billion 100W light bulbs simultaneously. However, in relation to total world energy consumption, it is less than 2%.

Joe Room, a Doctor of Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), considers it a “myth.” This climate change expert points out that the Internet offers many more benefits for the environment than its impact on energy use. On this consumption, it offers diverse data to demonstrate that some of the studies that have served to create this myth have been exaggerated.

In addition, Room recalls two issues that are often forgotten in these reports: on the one hand, the energy efficiency of computers, mobiles and other electronic devices grows every year, so that they do more with less energy; and on the other hand, the environmental benefits of the Internet (downloading music has a much smaller impact than physical disks, in the same way as teleconferences or teleworking compared to conventional meetings or work trips).

What businesses and consumers can do

Experts point out several tips for companies and citizens to reduce the environmental impact of the Internet and new technologies:

Replace fossil fuels with renewable energy: companies like Google or Yahoo! have incorporated sustainable energy and improved efficiency in some of their data centers. Consumers can use renewable systems in their homes to supply electricity to their computers and Internet connections, or buy green electricity. Claim an Internet with clean energy: in addition to large companies, the Internet is mostly home to many small and medium businesses. Those responsible could set an example and assume renewable energy. Citizens can contact these companies by email or on social networks to be aware. Developing systems that are increasingly efficient and respectful of nature: the generalization of “green” computers or the improvement of energy technology could be of great help. Use the Internet and the computer more ecologically: various tips can help reduce the energy consumption of these technologies.

Mostly inspired by the 1960’s & 70’s this aesthetic incorporates earthy tones with natural materials, creating an eclectic mix of textures and patterns. 
• Minimalism – Lovers of this aesthetic often incorporate this style not only in their homes but their way of life. In a minimalist’s home you will most likely find sleek lines with modern furnishing and white walls creating an open and airy space. Minimalism really is what it sounds like, Minimal! 

How can you get inspired? 

You would think that with the endless resources the modern world brings us, getting inspired would be easy as pie! However, we know that things can get a little overwhelming with the overload of information we have at our fingertips. You may be tempted to just settle for a simple internet quiz that claims it can magically tell you your aesthetic after just 5 Questions. Don’t get me wrong, you may find that these do give you some guidance in your search, (and for sure, there are some more detailed quizzes out there) but there are lots of more exciting places to find inspiration.

Applications like Instagram & Pinterest can be a great modern alternative to the home design magazines you would find on the shelf at your local store. With plenty of images showcasing some of the best homes on the planet, paired with an easy search function, you’ll be inspired in no time. 

Finding the right style for your home

As well as finding your aesthetic, it is important to consider the right style for your home. There will always be a way to embrace your aesthetic regardless of the space you have, you may just need to go about it with a different approach. 

For example, you may find that you have a small bedroom space to decorate but you absolutely love the mid century modern style where larger pieces of furniture are often prominent. Consider the functionality you need out of your space, you may need to make small sacrifices in order to obtain optimum functionality along with your style.  

Make an inspiration board

When decorating your home, the color of your walls & furnishings is obviously one of the main things to consider. With all of the design trends we have mentioned above, you may discover that they sometimes have clashing opinions of what is right and wrong. Just remember that you should be trying to create your own home & style, not trying to replicate what someone else has already done!

Color: What to consider

• When deciding on the color palette for your home, we recommend choosing 3-5 colors to work with. These few colors should cover everything from wall paint to throw cushions. This limit on colors will help you to stick to one cohesive theme throughout without any nasty clashes in style. We will say that in recent years there has been some design trends that celebrate a very eclectic blend of colors, certainly not sticking to the rules we have outlined above. Like we said, this is your home so the most important thing is celebrating your style! 
• Consider the natural light you have in your area. During your research you may find that some of your inspiration images feature dark walls, which may not be as appropriate for a space with little light. Of course we are not saying that you should scrap the idea completely, maybe consider alternative methods (such as accessories) to blend these colors in to your home.  

Shopping

Of course we all love a bit of arts & crafts, but it’s a great idea to keep all of your inspiration together digitally. Utilizing some of the digital inspiration resources we previously mentioned such as Instagram & Pinterest will help you to stick to your theme when it comes to shopping for your items. Having your images there for reference will ensure that you don’t get home and find you have fallen in love with something that doesn’t fit! Once you have decided on your color choices, you should also include in your board any pieces of furniture you find during your research so you can look out for them when you’re shopping. Finding the right inspiration can be a little overwhelming with hundreds of images you may come across on your search, this will really help you to stick to the plan. 

You Should Replace the Filter With Every Oil Change

When you take your car to your mechanic for your oil change, he or she will likely ask if you also want to replace the filter. At some shops, the mechanic will not even ask. It is assumed you will want this work done. Either way, you should get a new filter at these appointments to ensure oil continues to flow cleanly throughout the engine.

While many guides will tell you that you should replace the oil once every 3,000 miles, the truth is that most modern cars can go much longer than that. Unless you still drive a vehicle that is decades old, you should review our owner’s manual and see how long you should wait between oil changes. In general, you will not want to go longer than 5,000 miles on the same oil filter.

You Risk Catastrophic Failure If You Do Not Replace It

Replacement is essential if you choose to put a cheap oil filter in your engine system. Don’t forget car insurance and tax

The valve core comes first

There is a common mistake most motorbike users make when they are about to change their tires. They go for other parts of the tire except for the valve core. No matter how flat the tire is, always remove the valve core first and ensure you mark the valve stem so that you won’t encounter difficulty replacing it.

Breaking the bead comes next

Hold it, you don’t have to pull out your implements if you haven’t followed this next step. After removing the valve core, you need to break the tire bead. If you can’t do it with your bare hands, you can use either a bench vice, welding clamp or a C-clamp. Most tires usually have two bead parts. So ensure you flip the other side of the tire.

Lubricate and remove the tire

Once the bead on both sides of the tire has been broken, it is time for the tire to come off. Get a very good lubricant or starchy food like custard and apply on the rim. The advantage of this is that the lubricant makes the tire beads slide over the rim easily.

Pull the inner tube out

Sometimes, it is easier to remove the tire other times it hard. But if you are having difficulty you can use flattened metal rods. After removing the tire, the next step is to remove the inner tube. If you are replacing the tube: get a fresh one.

If not, inspect the tube for scratches, perforations or signs of impending damage. You will be lucky in some cases to find shards of glass or nails or other pointy objects that were responsible for damaging the tube (N.B: Be careful; you might hurt your hands in the process)

Inspect the rim and apply duct tape

The inner tube isn’t the only part of the tire that needs an inspection. The rim should also be inspected for damage like cracks and abrasions between the spoke holes. To see the rim clearly, use a coarse and abrasive pad or a wire brush to clean the rims. After this process is completed apply duct tape or electric tape to wrap the rims if you don’t fancy rim bands.

Arrange the new tire on the rim

It is believed that at this point you are now installing the new tire. First, you have to install the new tube and inflate it to take the shape of the tire. Next, lube the tire beads and force it over the rim. This shouldn’t take time or effort.

Inflate and get set to zoom off

When you are sure that everything is set: tire bead in place, valve stem in its hole and tire fully rotated. Inflate the tire slowly until it reaches the recommended pressure and you are good to go.

Wicklow

The county town of Wicklow features in a number of TV shows including Little Women and Ballykissangel, while Humewood Castle in Kiltegan features in the film Ella Enchanted.  Wicklow also makes an appearance in the Hollywood hit, Braveheart featuring Mel Gibson. Kippure Holiday Village which is in the middle of the Wicklow Mountains is one of the main locations of the film.

1. The Shining

Stanley Kubrick’s chilling 1980 classic has many memorable scenes, but its most iconic must be when Jack Nicholson smashes through a bedroom door with an axe, sticks his head in the hole he’s created and snarls the immortal line ‘here’s Johnny!’ at terrified co-star Shelly Duvall.

As an interesting aside, the scene had to be re-shot after Nicholson, who was trained as a fire warden, originally destroyed the door far too quickly for Kubrick’s liking!

2. The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe

As any C.S. Lewis fan knows, the wardrobe door in the classic children’s tale The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe is the children’s portal to the fantastic (and fearful!) land of Narnia. Most recently brought to the silver screen in the 2005 film adaptation starring William Moseley and Anna Popplewell, this wardrobe must be one of the most famous pieces of furniture in popular entertainment.

Lewis dedicated the book to Lucy Barfield, the daughter of his close friend and adviser Owen Barfield, and she was his inspiration for the main protagonist.

3. Notting Hill

The iconic blue door from 1999’s Notting Hill, directed by Richard Curtis, plays a pivotal role in what must be one of the movie’s most memorable scenes.

Once the paparazzi catch wind that Hugh Grant’s dithering bookshop owner is in a relationship with Julia Roberts’ Hollywood superstar, they descend on Grant’s bedsit like a pack of wolves. As a distraction, his wild flatmate (Rhys Ifans) captures their attention by posing comically at the door in his underpants.

The portal actually belonged to a church conversion that director Curtis was said to have lived in previously, and the original blue version was sold in a charity auction, but you can pose for a selfie in front of its replacement (in your undies or otherwise attired!) at 280 Westbourne Park Road, Notting Hill, London.
